Pure cotton, that is, 100% cotton, 100% cotton clothes are inelastic. There are many kinds of pure cotton, but the content is not 100%. For example, our common Lycra cotton content is 95 or 97% cotton plus 5 or 3% Lycra. Cotton polyester: that is, cotton + polyester. Yes, usually 80%+20%.
There are two reasons why cotton clothes are elastic
The first is that the fabric of cotton clothes is knitted. Knitting is a weaving method of fabric, and the fabric produced has a certain elasticity. Many of our summer T-shirts and cultural shirts are knitwear.
The second reason is that elastic fibers are added to cotton fibers, the most common of which is spandex. Spandex is less hygroscopic and breathable than cotton, and its content in fabrics is generally not high. Increased elasticity of clothing can make people more comfortable when exercising, so now there are many clothes with spandex added to cotton.
So how to tell whether it is pure cotton?
First of all, check the elasticity of pure cotton fabric by its feel. You can pull it to see the rebound of the fabric. Generally, the pulling range is small. And slow recovery is a characteristic of pure cotton.
Secondly, pure cotton fabric does not feel very smooth, and even feels a bit jerky. Pure cotton wrinkles recover slowly, which can be used as a reference when making general judgments.
Third, pure cotton fabric will not shrink when exposed to fire. It usually burns slowly like paper. When testing, you can take a cotton thread and light it to see the burning effect.
Fourth, observe the ashes after burning. The color of the flame produced during burning is yellow, and the burning smell is similar to that of burning paper, without any peculiar smell. Generally, pure cotton materials will turn into powdery ash after burning.
Fifth, lay the fabric flat, fold it in half along a line, and then lightly scratch the crease with your fingernail. The more obvious the crease, the more cotton it contains.
Sixth, hold a piece of fabric up to the sun and look for it. Generally, pure cotton fabrics have no reflective effect, so if you hold it up to the light and there is no sparkle, it means it is a good pure cotton material.
